Top Secret CrossFit USA Weightlifting Open Training

Below is a summary of my training from August 12th – October 1st in preparation for the first annual CrossFit USA Weightlifting Open at the Cheyenne Mountain Resort in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

James FitzGerald offered to help me prepare for this competition and to help finance the trip through the Big Dawgs dish. This was an offer I couldn’t refuse….

This was an interesting month and a half. In the simplest terms, there was a lot going on for me at this time in my life. The last week in August I embarked on my new career as a Junior High Math Teacher. Needless to say this translated into a lot of work and a lot of late nights. On top of it all I was planning for my wedding which was on September 18th in Elkwater Alberta and somewhere in there was my bachelor party.

During this period I went through 3 different phases of being sick, each time a whole different sickness. The last bought of sickness started the week of the competition and has lasted really up until now. Fortunate for me the it was merely a chest cold and all I really had to deal with was coughing and burning lungs and my performance didn’t really suffer.

Despite all of this, it was a major learning experience. I had to learn how to deal with a new life style and to be honest; I am still learning how to manage. Looking back at my notes for my training, there are several instances where my body was clearly starting to shut down, and I should have forgot all about the plans James and I had, listened to my body, and taken time to rest in order to prevent myself from being sick. I have to thank James for pointing this out to me, and the last couple weeks I feel as though I was able to dodge being sicker then I was from following his advice and taking the time to rest when I felt I needed it.

James FitzGerald is a genius and has never let me down with his programming. Despite all that I went through in my training leading up to the event, it was unreal how good I felt the day of. The way he is able to program for my performance to peak at the right time is crazy. I really felt like my training leading up to the event was less then ideal, but I went in with the goal of putting in full effort and walking away with no regrets.

On the day of the competition I ended up tying a PR on my snatch, PR’ing on my Clean and Jerk by 5kg and putting in a solid effort on the triplet. This landed me a silver medal in the 94kg weight class behind Matt Chan. I couldn’t be happier about my performance, and I had a great experience, met some awesome people and ultimately gained the confidence to be able to move forward.

For the competition I roomed up with fellow Big Dawg Nathan Holiday. This guy is a solid dude and it was a pleasure spending the weekend bullshitting and enjoying the experience. I think the relationship we developed over the weekend is going to help push us both to new levels in weightlifting and CrossFit. Big things to come in 2011…

So next goal is to win the Alberta Provincial Championship Weightlifting Meet in Calgary on November 20th, 2010. I will be doing a six week training cycle programmed by Greg Everett who suggested this cycle from his archives on his website (www.cathletics.com) to help me peak on the weekend of the competition. I have also decided that I am going to make the lofty goals of breaking the provincial records for the 94kg weight class. I would need to snatch 131kg and clean and jerk 161kg. These may be lofty goal but I figure I am sick of doubting myself, so I’m just going to giver’ and see what happens. So here we go, I will now be posting on a daily basis up until the meet in November. Training starts on Monday…
